geography of my grandfather

he sits, benignly
loose skin
a running stream
through my
tangled horsehair.

but he minds, not
as I cup his chin of
granite
and stroke his fissure
of a jawline.

his cheeks are cirque
sunken,
treasure is his smile

erosion has not yet claimed
the weathered knees
and I can still
plant myself on thighs,
thankfully

he would echo the
avalanche she created,
sometimes
the biting wind in his
hemisphere,
the very karst
she had left of him, behind

then I would tug, the
tundra of his beard
and he would laugh, a
rising rumble
from the valley
of his belly

there is no watershed
of our conversations
they are ever meandering
there is no gulf
between us, no density
of heavy air, no still atmosphere

sometimes, the river would
end in
silence,
and the silence would
rest gently like pebbles at the bottom,
alluvium

from Pangea
into continents,
to countries,
for the whole land

he is the
epitomy of my
epicenter.
